It was a good thing I was hankering for some theatre to rock my world when I went to see CORDELIA, because this is exactly what was dished up.

CORDELIA

A writer and director of true theatrical instincts and of genuine originality. Her dialogue is impressive in its storytelling, in its wit, and in its feel for the rhythms of verse and spoken speech.

Tapping into eternal themes of love, family and mortality, CORDELIA is a theatrical experience driven by the stories and tribulations of a twisted royal family plagued by secrets and jealousy. Serving as a contemporary prequel to Shakespeare’s iconic King Lear, CORDELIA follows three sisters through the eyes of the King of France, navigating their way through a harrowing dreamlike retelling of their pasts. Bold, visual and experiential theatre, CORDELIA combines wild storytelling, ironic humor, and heightened physicality with the images and sounds of an 80’s childhood. What results is a time-warped world that swirls in and out of the past, present and future, illuminating a young woman’s journey to love, truth and freedom.

CORDELIA was presented at The Street Theatre, Canberra in 2011. It’s development was supported by Gasworks Art Park and HotHouse Theatre’s Month in the Country residency program (now known as GreenHouse National Artist Residency Program).
